Desperate couple have miracle baby after acupuncture (original) (raw)
Rhian and Rolant spent years and thousands of pounds trying for a baby without success, until they turned to acupuncture and welcomed little Macsen into the family
TEACHER Rhian Gwyn had spent six years trying for a baby.
She spent thousands of pounds on fertility treatment but nothing seemed to work.
Rhian suffered a miscarriage a few years into her marriage to Rolant, and the couple had almost given up on starting a family.
Four years after the miscarriage the couple continued trying for a baby and sought advice from their GP, only to be told there was nothing medically wrong with them.
But all the time their anxiety grew as friends starting having children, making Rhian increasingly sad and frustrated with her situation.
“Every time friends had a baby I felt so happy for them but wondered why it was not happening to us,” she said.
“I thought I can’t go on like this.”
Rhian was put on the waiting list for fertility treatment at Cardiff’s University Hospital of Wales.
After a two-year wait her treatment started – but again without any success.
Determined not to give up, the couple signed up for private fertility treatment at a clinic in Swansea spending up to £4,000. But this also failed.
“We starting thinking maybe we were not destined to have children and should perhaps look at adoption or even accept our fate and remain childless,” said Rhian.
It was at that point that Rhian stumbled upon the idea of acupuncture after reading articles on the subject.
Believing this was her last chance, she started to attend acupuncture sessions at the Natural Health and Fertility Clinic in Whitchurch, Cardiff, under the care of Jackie Brown.
Within six months Rhian became pregnant, and she is convinced that it was the whole experience of the acupuncture, conducted by wonderful staff in an understanding environment, which led to the birth of baby Macsen nine months ago.
“It was a lovely and totally relaxing treatment and Jackie was so reassuring,” she said.
“She understood what I was going through and reassured me, and encouraged me not to give up trying.”
Although a pregnancy was confirmed Rhian decided to continue with her acupuncture sessions every two or three weeks, which cost around £20 a session.
She also had treatment right up until the birth.
“The needles were placed in different areas but usually in the stomach, the back of my legs and feet and in the middle of my forehead,” she said.
“I would often find myself falling asleep it was so relaxing and I would highly recommend it to anyone.”
Rhian, 37, of Pontcanna, Cardiff, believes the acupuncture was the perfect antidote to her stressful job as a Welsh language teacher at Plasmawr Comprehensive School in Fairwater, Cardiff, and played a crucial part in balancing out her hectic working life.
She added: “It was a fantastic pregnancy and we’ve been so lucky.
“We’ve got our child and he’s a handful, but just gorgeous.
“If we wanted more children I would definitely have acupuncture again.”
