NOTES
In Dreams from my father, on p. 63, Mr. Obama describes how, while a schoolboy, he told his classmates the false story that his father was a prince, and his grandfather a king, of the Luo. Later, when, as an adult, Mr. Obama learns the true story of his father's Luo background (p. 394 et seq.), he finds no African royalty. Mr. Obama appears to be unaware of his descent(s) from European royalty (see, for example, Note 6168 and Note 14183, below).
1 -- Barack Obama's original birth certificate, available on the Web at http://my.barackobama.com/page/invite/birthcert and through http://www.fightthesmears.com, gives his name as "Barack Hussein Obama II", not "Jr." That usage has been followed here.
4 -- For his ancestry, see Dreams, p. 394 et seq.
5 -- Mr. Obama's "grandmother", whom he visited at Nyangoma-Kogelo, Kenya, as recently as August 2006, is actually his step-grandmother, a different one of the several polygamous wives of his grandfather Onyango.
6 -- For some of his ancestry, seehttp://www.journeyback.com/DUNHAM/fam00991.htm.
15 -- For some of her ancestry, seehttp://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/m/a/r/Robert-L-Mardock/GENE12-0003.html.
In Dreams, p. 13, Mr. Obama says that "a distant ancestor" of hers "had indeed been a full-blooded Cherokee". No evidence has been found to support this claim.
At the end of the 19th century, her paternal grandparents lived in the Chickasaw Nation in what is now Oklahoma, but in the census enumeration (see above) they are listed as "White", not as "Indian".
31 -- For some of her ancestry, seehttp://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~nataletne/Overton/pt.htm#i112.
49 -- For some of her ancestry, seehttp://dgmweb.net/genealogy/FGS/D/DunhamJacobMackey-LouiseElizaStroup.shtml.
50 -- Falmouth Kearney (as Falmouth Carney) is on the passenger list of the "Marmion", out of Liverpool, 20 Mar 1850 (age 19, from Ireland, destination Ohio).
See http://www.rte.ie/news/2007/0315/obamab.htmland http://www.ireland.com/newspaper/frontpage/2007/0503/1178025880892.htmland http://www.eneclann.ie/Research/genealogy_Obama_family_history.html.
53 -- See http://www.childers-childress.com/spanningpart3.html and http://www.geocities.com/momdit2/childress.html. She married first [Lewis County, Mo., 11 Feb. 1868] James Osburn, second George W. Armour [number 52] and third [on Lewis Co., Mo., 21 Dec. 1897] James T. Turner. Turner had previously been married [Clark Co., Mo., 30 July 1861] to Nancy's sister Sarah Catharine Turner [b. 1844, d. 4 April 1897].
On 10 February 1877, James and Sarah joined the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (RLDS). Both James and Sarah remained members of the RLDS branch at Deloit, Mo., until their deaths (James died 13 May 1907). When James married Nancy in 1897, she too joined the RLDS, and remained a member of that church until her death.
The RLDS is now known as the Community of Christ, and is headquartered in Independence, Mo. It separated from the main LDS church (the Salt Lake City branch, the Mormons) in 1860 over doctrinal differences, but is still a member of the Latter Day Saints movement. Because Nancy Ann Childress Osburn Armour Turner [number 53] belonged to the RLDS, this makes Barack Obama the first US President with LDS ancestry.
See http://www.keepapitchinin.org/2009/05/06/a-mormon-in-the-family-treefor more details.
54 -- For details of the Civil War service of Columbus Clark, see the 2 Feb 2008 posting by Loretta-Marie Dimond at http://genforum.genealogy.com/civilwar/messages/24532.html. My thanks to Jay Webber

Intelligence of the death of Robert Wolfley, of Olathe, was received Monday. His brother, E. Wolfley, lives near Edgerton.
193 -- http://www.chenoweth.com/ch7w000.htm#w07443suggests that she was Hannah Chenoweth.
224 -- In February 1808, Jesse Payne, then residing in Monongalia County, Virginia [now West Virginia], conveyed to his children (including Francis Payne, number 112, above) twelve of his slaves (Old Vilet, Chany, Young Vilet, Nancy, Peggy, Little William, Moriah, Sarah, Caty, Susannah, Selah, and Isaac) in consideration of the 500 pounds advanced to him. See Record of the Monongalia Superior Court by Melba Zinn, page 14. My thanks to John M. Cogar
for the citation.
238 -- See his biography at http://www.heritagepursuit.com/Licking/LickingFile12u-z.htm.
388 -- The material on the Gutknecht ancestry was extracted from "Gutknecht in Germantown from Bischweiler in 1749 with notes on Grünholtz",Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine, vol. 44, pp. 37-42. My thanks to Brian Casto for this citation.
At the time the Gutknecht and Grünholtz families lived there, Bischweiler was a seat of one of the innumerable branches of the Palatine Counts (Pfalzgrafen). It is now called Bischwiller, and it is in the Bas-Rhin Department of France.

FURTHER NOTES
In Dreams from my father, Mr. Obama states, on p. 13: " ... one of my great-great-grandfathers, Christopher Columbus Clark, had been a decorated Union soldier, his wife's mother was rumored to have been a second cousin of Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederacy". This statement is incorrect, as Christopher Columbus Clark [number 54, above] was Mr. Obama's great-great-great-grandfather, not his great-great-grandfather.
The rumored connection of Clark's wife's mother, Mrs. Louisiana Duvall Overall [number 111, above], to Jefferson Davis appears to be incorrect. Barbara Clark Rees
, a descendant of Alpheus Clark, a brother of Christopher Columbus Clark, writes to say that the parents of Alpheus and Christopher Columbus Clark were Thomas Clark and Elizabeth Davis, and that the correct tradition is that the relationship to Jefferson Davis is through the mother, not the mother-in-law, of Christopher Columbus Clark.
FURTHER NOTES
None of Mr. Obama's ancestors lived under slavery in North America. The first of Mr. Obama's paternal ancestors to leave Kenya was Mr. Obama's own father, who left in the mid-20th century, about 100 years after slavery had been abolished in the United States.
Several of Mr. Obama's maternal ancestors owned slaves. Mr. Obama's slave-owning ancestors include George Washington Overall (number 110, above, husband of Mrs. Louisiana Duvall Overall and father-in-law of the Christopher Columbus Clark mentioned above) and Mrs. Mary Grable Duvall (number 223, above, mother of Mrs. Louisiana Duvall Overall and grandmother-in-law of Christopher Columbus Clark), both of whom are enumerated in the 1850 Federal Census as slave owners. George Washington Overall is also enumerated in the 1860 Federal Census as a slave owner. Other slave-owning ancestors of Mr. Obama include John P. Childress (or Childers, number 212, above), who was enumerated in the 1860 Federal Census as a slave owner. See the Extracts from the Federal Censuses, above, for details. See also Note 224, above.
On 4 March 2007, in a speech at the George C. Wallace Community College in Selma, Alabama, Mr. Obama acknowledged his mother's slave-owning ancestors, adding "That's no surprise. That's part of our tortured, tangled history." See http://www.nytimes.com/2007/03/05/us/politics/05selma.html.

Note that in the above table, Sen. Obama is described as 50% Luo (on his father's side). Some places claim that he is instead 43.75% Arabic and 6.25% African Negro (on his father's side). All of these claims appear to trace back to Kenneth E. Lamb, specifically to his blog entry here.
In the blog entry, Mr. Lamb states that only one of Sen. Obama's great-great-grandparents on his father's side was an "ethnically African Negro", while the other great-great-grandparents on his father's side were "ethnically Arabic". In other words, only one of Sen. Obama's ancestors between numbers 16 and 23 (inclusive) was an African Negro (specifically between numbers 20 and 23, because Mr. Lamb states that it was one of Sen. Obama's father's maternal great-grandparents who was the Negro), while his other ancestors between numbers 16 and 23 (inclusive) were "Arabic".
How Mr. Lamb was able to ascertain this is a mystery. Sen. Obama's, great-aunt, when describing their patrilineal ancestry (as reported by Sen. Obama in Dreams from my father, p. 394), says that "[t]he women who bore them, their names are forgotten, for that was the way of our people." Yet Mr. Lamb appears to claim that the names, the ancestry, and the ethnicity, of these women have been retrieved.
In any case, Mr. Lamb has not published his evidence, either in his blog entry or anywhere else, so it has been impossible to evaluate the basis for Mr. Lamb's claim. For this reason, the description of Sen. Obama as 50% Luo (on his father's side) has been retained.
FURTHER NOTES
One of the more entertaining crackpot ideas about Barack Obama is that he was born in Kenya, and that as a result he is ineligible to become President of the United States. It's true, Barack Obama was born in Kenya. He is ineligible to become President of the United States not only because of his Kenyan birth, but because he's been dead since 1982. It's his son, a different Barack Obama, who was born in Honolulu in 1961 and who was legitimately elected President of the United States in 2008.
FURTHER NOTES
The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) publishes a Patriot Index, a list of persons whose honorable service in the cause of independence during the American Revolution renders their female descendants eligible for membership in the NSDAR. Several ancestors of Barack Obama appear in thePatriot Index, including:
Phillip Ament (number 426)
David Bowles (number 904)
James Browning (number 442)
John Miles Duvall (number 444)
Samuel Goodnight (number 194)
James Hickman (number 886)
Elijah Holloway (number 408)
Thomas Martin (number 454)
John Overall (number 440)
Moses Teague (number 974)
David Toot (number 932)
George Toot (number 466)
James Wellborn (number 486)
John Conrad Wolfley (number 464)
While Mr. Obama is not eligible for membership in the NSDAR (by not being female), he is eligible for membership in the equivalent organization for men, the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution.
