'Twas the night before Christmas, and on the dry pitch, Not a player was stirring, not even to switch. The jerseys were hung in the clubhouse with care, In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there. Kangaroos lounged by the goals in the shade, While esky lids closed to cool drinks that were made. The coach, with his sunnies, West Point hat on his head, Had just finished cooking the snags wrapped in bread. When out on the field there arose such a clatter, I jumped from the benches to see what’s the matter. Away to the 18-yard box I dashed in a flash, Leaping over the camp chairs and discarded trash. The Aussie sun glinted on grass, scorched and bare, Lighting up a sleigh zooming down through the air. With an old bloke in boardies, a singlet, and thongs, I knew in a moment St. Nick came along! More rapid than emus, his players they came, And he whistled and shouted and called them by name: "Now Matilda! Now Timmy! Now Kewell and Cahill! On Kerr! On Viduka! On Aloisi—what skill! To the top of the goals! Past the corner flag too! Now dribble and pass, there’s still work to do!” Like a southerly breeze through the gum trees they flew, With a sleigh full of gear and St. Nicholas too. And then, with a bounce, on the field they all landed, He grabbed at his bag with movements so candid. With a slap on his knee and a good-natured laugh, He waved to us all as he gained the attacking half. He wore zinc on his nose and a hat strung with corks, And his cheeks were as red as Heinz tomato sauce. His stubby shorts sagged, his singlet looked loose, And he drank from a bottle of fresh mango juice. He pulled out new jerseys in green and in gold, Shin guards, fresh boots, and balls bright and bold. There were hats for the heat and blue Powerade, “Summer’s no excuse, mate, to not have a play!” With a wink and a nod, he hopped in his sleigh, "Time for a dip at the beach, by the bay!” But I heard him exclaim as he flew out of sight, “Merry Chrissie to all, and a scorcher tonight!” #WPSC #WestPointSoccer #FootballVictoria #season2025 #footballaus #miniroos #merrychristmas #WestPointSoccerClub ...
