DEFENCEMAN Jocelyne Larocque of Ste. Anne has been named to Canada’s national women’s hockey team for the 2011 4 Nations Cup tournament Nov. 9-14 in Nyköping, Sweden.
Larocque is among 23 players named to the team out of the September Camp/Fall Festival in Calgary Sept. 17-25.

DRENIN Busch, quarterback for the Murdoch MacKay Clansmen, scored all of his team’s points in their Winnipeg High School Football League game last week and has been named the special teams player of the week in the Potter AAA division.
Busch, who is also his team’s placekicker, booted three field goals and three singles in a 12-4 victory over Sisler AAA last Wednesday.
The offensive player is Sturgeon Heights Huskies receiver Zach Regert, who had five receptions for 62 yards and a touchdown in addition to a punt return touchdown.
The defensive player is Oak Park Raiders defensive back Braedy Will, who recorded two interceptions and three tackles.
Vidruk AA West division: offence, Garden City Fighting Gophers running back Xavier Prime; defence, Vincent Massey-Brandon Vikings linebacker Jesse Smith; special teams, Garden City kicker Matt Barbardson.
Vidruk AA East division: offence, Dakota Lancers quarterback Lyall Buckland; defence, Steinbach Sabres linebacker Garret Friesen; special teams, Dakota Lancers linebacker Tyler Prusak.
Currie A division: offence, Daniel McIntyre Maroons quarterback Kim Ebron; defence, Sisler Spartans linebacker Jonathan Chaves; special teams, Dryden Eagles kick returner Ben Arsenault.
Junior varsity: offence, Churchill Bulldogs quarterback William Reimer; defence, Vincent Massey-Winnipeg Trojans linebacker Colin Simon; special teams, Sisler Spartans running back Joel Stewart.

THE University of Winnipeg Wesmen women’s volleyball team beat the U of M Bisons 3-2 (23-25, 25-23, 17-25,25-18,15-11) in the championship match of the Lea Marc Volleyball Challenge pre-season tournament on Sunday at the U of W Duckworth Centre. Wesmen fifth-year middle Lauren Sears was named tournament MVP.
NIC Demski of the University of Manitoba Bisons (2-3) has been named the Canada West conference special teams player of the week after the rookie kick returner and running back recorded his second kickoff return for a touchdown in just his fifth university game.
Demski, only 17, returned the opening kickoff for a 100-yard touchdown in Manitoba’s 26-18 loss on Friday in Regina to the Rams.
BRANDON Wheat Kings’ captain Mark Stone, 19, of Winnipeg has been named the Western Hockey League player of the week.
Stone recorded nine points — four goals and five assists — while posting a plus-3 rating in three games last week to help Brandon to a 3-1-0-1 record to start the 2011-12 season.
On Saturday, Stone scored his second career hat trick and added an assist in Brandon’s 6-0 win over the Saskatoon Blades at Brandon’s Westman Place. He scored the overtime goal in last Wednesday’s 6-5 win over the Broncos in Swift Current and he had two assists in Friday’s 5-4 win over the Broncos in Brandon.

IN soccer action at the U of M, the Bisons women’s team lost a pair of games at Turf Field West. On Sunday, the Trinity Western Spartans defeated the Bisons 4-1 with Bisons’ goalkeeper Chloe Werle named the player of the game. Paula Fast scored Manitoba’s goal. On Saturday, the Bisons were shut out 2-0 by the UBC Thunderbirds.

WITH just one game left in the 2011 Prairie Football Conference season, the Winnipeg Rifles junior football team (3-4) has clinched a playoff berth.
The Rifles will carry a three-game losing skid into Calgary to meet the Colts on Sunday.
Last Sunday, the Rifles played their last game in Canad Inns Stadium, dropping a 48-28 decision to the Saskatoon Hilltops, who earned their fourth straight PFC regular-season title.
