The College of Wooster Scottish Arts Society’s purpose is to promote, provide and educate individuals about the Scottish arts and culture at the College of Wooster and within the community of The City of Wooster. The Wooster Scottish Arts Society will further school spirit and support other campus organizations, athletic programs and campus wide events through performances with the different branches of WooSAS. Our club is composed of both members of the Scottish Arts program and non-members who would like to support Scottish arts and culture on campus.

The College of Wooster Pipe Band and Highland Dancers

• Pipe Band ranges in skill level from beginner to top amateur grades
• Highland Dancers includes all levels of ability of Highland and Celtic dance
• Private lessons in each discipline can be taken for .5 or 1.0 course credit

Pipe Band and Highland Dancers Performance Opportunities

• Both groups perform with the Scot Marching Band at home football games in the fall
• Both are also a part of the Scot Symphonic Band in the spring which includes traveling with the Band during spring break
• Other performances may include Moove-In, First Year Orientation, Opening Convocation, Trustee Events, Admissions Programs, Athletic Contests, and Commencement

Wooster Scottish Arts Society (WooSAS)

• Student organization made up of performing and non-performing members
• Purpose is to teach, foster, and provide for Scottish Arts and Culture at Wooster

Scottish Arts & Culture at Wooster Scottish Arts Scholarships

• Available to incoming first-year students only
• Audition-based scholarships that can be done in person or by submitting an audio or video recording
• Scholarship amounts range from 2,000−2,000-2,000−8,000 per year, renewable for up to 4 years

Scottish Arts Faculty

Palmer Shonk, Adjunct Instructor of Bagpipes

• 2010 graduate of the College of Wooster
• Recipient of Scottish Arts scholarship for bagpipes while at Wooster
• 20 years of playing experience
• Former 8-year member of the grade 1 Toronto Police Pipe Band
• Currently competes in the professional category in EUSPBA

Sean Lawry, Adjunct Instructor of Scottish Drumming

• 22 years experience as a pipe band snare drummer
• Has taught drum corps and solo snare drummers from Gr. 5-1 for 17 years
• Also instructs the 87th Cleveland Pipe Band and the West Side Irish American Pipe Band

Sara Szabo, Adjunct Instructor of Highland Dance

• Has taught competitive Scottish Highland Dance since 1998
• Opened her own studio in Westlake, Ohio, in 2003
• Certified to teach through the British Association of Teachers of Dance
• Member of the Federation of United States Teachers and Adjudicators
