Summary:These papers consist of 2 distinct collections: papers concerning Hans Werner Henze and papers concerning Morton and Heddy Baum. The Henze papers include 82 items of correspondence (chiefly ALS) from Henze to Heddy Baum, 1973-1990; 3 ALS from Henze to Gert and Hilde von Gontard, 1974-1975, with an enclosed copy of a letter from Henze to Mr. Oppenheimer, 1975; a complete catalog of Henze's works, 1968; a copy of the play by Edward Bond on which Henze based the opera We come to the river; a pencil holograph of Henze's Piano sonata; and a portfolio published by the Frankfurt Feste '86 containing 5 portraits of Henze by his friend Renzo Vespignani, an essay on Vespignani by Henze, and 5 facsimiles of sketches of Henze's compositions. These last 2 items have also been cataloged in the RLIN Scores file. The Baum materials include a typescript history of City Center from 1945-1956, including inserted clippings and letters to Morton Baum from Leonard Bernstein, William Grant Still, JoseĢ Ferrer and others; clippings about City Center, 1966; City Center annual report 1967-8; program and clippings about a memorial concert for Morton Baum, 1969; autographed booklet from Bayreuther Festspiel, 1954; program of Samuel Barber memorial concert, 1981; letters to Heddy Baum from Samuel Barber, Lotte Lenya, Gian Carlo Menotti and others, 1973-1989. A portrait by Fritz Wolff of Polish violinist Bronislaw Huberman has been separated from the collection and transferred to the Music Division's iconography collection, PhD 2546
