Straight Numerical Files, (a series). 1904-1937 | WorldCat.org (original) (raw)
Summary:General correspondence file consisting of both letters received and letters sent. Oversize cartographic and other enclosures are filed separately. From 1904 to 1912 these files were the only Department of Justice central files, though copies of letters sent were frequently placed in bound volumes (PI194, E76) as well as in these numerical files. Classified administration files for judicial districts were established in 1912 (DCNV85-A780) and the classified subject files were begun in 1914 (DCNV85-A114). These two files gradually replaced the straight numerical files except as a series for materials that could not properly be placed in the classified subject files. Subject matter in these numerical files for the period 1904-1912 is similar to that in the earlier "Year Files" (PI194, E72). Although the straight numerical files gradually became much less significant after 1912, no uniform rule was applied to divide material between them and the classified subject files. For many subjects both files must be examined
