Summary:This Accession consists primarily of letters from Randolph Fairfax to his parents and siblings and include a description of the impact of the early days of secession and the Civil War on students at the University of Virginia by Randolph Fairfax who attended during the school year 1860-1861, discussion of army life, specific battles in Virginia during the period 1861-1862, 1864, operations of the signal corps around Richmond in 1864 and on the North Carolina coast in that same year, and family matters. Of special note is a copy of a letter from General Robert E. Lee to Mary R. Fairfax, dated November 8, 1864, expressing concern for a promotion for Ethelbert Fairfax in the signal corps. The collection also contains a copy of a pass issued to Bryan Fairfax and his son, Thomas Fairfax, by General George Washington in order that they might travel through the lines to New York in 1777
