James Wilkinson papers, 1784-1824 1794-1817 (bulk dates) | WorldCat.org (original) (raw)

Summary:This is the correspondence of James Wilkinson, a soldier and politician during the American Revolution and the early Republic. Many of the letters present evidence of Wilkinson's questionable actions. One letter (2 February, 1794) to Anthony Wayne about George Rogers Clark urges Wayne to use Federal troops to stop Clark and warns that if he doesn't, the towns in question "must all be victims of a lawless usurpation". Many of the letters, written to Solomon Van Rennselaer, a captain under Anthony Wayne and later a member of Congress from New York, concern land purchases, his demand for a court-martial, his defense of his behavior during the War of 1812, and the compilation of his memoirs. A portrait of Wilkinson is also included
