Summary:Correspondence and diaries of Gen. Caspar Crowninshield (1837-1897), of Boston, Mass., including letters to his mother describing activities, campaigns, and military responsibilities in the Civil War, during which he served as an officer with the 20th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, Company E of the 1st Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Cavalry, and the 2nd Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Cavalry; correspondence (1916-65) of his granddaughter, Constance Crowninshield (Coolidge) Magnus (1892-1973), describing her activities and social life as wife of a U.S. diplomat in Tokyo, Peking, and Paris; and other Crowninshield and Coolidge family papers. Correspondents include Charles Francis Adams (1866-1954), Lady Astor, Phillips Brooks, W. Somerset Maugham, H.G. Wells, the Duchess of Windsor, and Leonard Wood. Also included is a notebook containing photocopies of the Civil War letters, 1863-1865
