Summary:The Edward Scribner Ames Papers consist primarily of manuscripts addressing a variety of religious topics. The manuscripts include Ames's speeches delivered at The Fourth Annual Pastor's Institute held at the University of Chicago (1936) and the Gates Memorial Lectures held in Grinnell, Iowa (1937). Also included are manuscripts of many of his sermons and lecture notes, as well as articles printed in various religious magazines. A few manuscripts by other authors are included in the collection. The correspondence includes letters from E.A Burtt, John Dewey, George Herbert Mead, Arthur Murphy and James H. Tufts. Most of the correspondence deals with administrative problems in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Chicago during the 1930's. The Ames papers also include 36 appointment books (1915-1955), five diaries (1887-1931), and two address books, all of which are arranged chronologically. A genealogy of the Ames family, compiled in 1966 by Van Meter Ames, is also part of the papers. An almost complete collection of The Scroll magazine from Spring 1926 to Autumn 1958, was donated by Van Meter Ames and S. Morris Eames in 1982, and is housed with the Little Magazine Collection in the Rare Book Room of Special Collections. These papers of Edward Scribner Ames are a small collection and do not appear to represent the bulk of Ames's work
