Philadelphia theatrical commentaries : by William Meredith, 1852-1857 | WorldCat.org (original) (raw)

Summary:In 2 boxes. Consists mainly of longhand commentaries on various theatrical performances which Meredith attended at theaters in Philadelphia. The dates range from December 1852 through January 1857. The arrangement is mostly chronological. Meredith seems to have been an avid theatregoer during this period. The commentaries were generally written either the same day as the performance or the next day. They frequently contain Meredith's opinions, often scathing, of the performers he saw, many of whom were famous actors in their time. Most of the performances described were given at the Walnut Street Theatre, though several were at the Chestnut Street Theatre, Arch Street Theatre and other theaters in Philadelphia. Also includes a brief description of the history and contents of the collection, written in September 1974 by Horace Howard Furness Jayne, grandson of the Philadelphia Shakespeare scholar Horace Howard Furness.
