Mary Earhart Dillon collection, 1863-1955 (inclusive) | WorldCat.org (original) (raw)

Summary:Correspondence, articles, speeches, biographical material, diaries, appointment books, leaflets, pamphlets, banners, posters, clippings, cartoons, poems, songs, plays and other memorabilia comprise the collection. The largest series is the papers of Catharine Waugh McCulloch (1862-1945), a lawyer and a leader in the women's suffrage movement in Chicago, in Illinois, and as a member and officer of the National American Woman Suffrage Association; she was later active in the League of Women Voters. The next largest series is the papers of Anna Howard Shaw (1847-1919), collected by her secretary and friend, Lucy Anthony. Shaw, a minister, was president of NAWSA, 1904-1915, and chairman of the Woman's Division of the Council of National Defense, 1916-1918. Her diaries and appointment books, 1889-1919, are included, as well as correspondence, articles, speeches, tributes, and memorials. Smaller series concern women's suffrage, especially in Illinois, or the status of women in teaching or in the legal profession. Also included are copies of documents from the Maud Wood Park collection (see the Woman's Rights Collection in the Schlesinger Library) and correspondence pertaining to civil service from Harriett Reid, arbitrator of the Illinois Industrial Commission, 1920-1937
