Written from Devonshire Terrace. Signed Charles Dickens
Dickens had paid Webster £50 on 1 May for the original of his frontispiece to the Cheap Edition of Nicholas Nickleby ("Dotheboys Hall: The Brimstone and Treacle Scene"). The 12 guineas were presumably Chapman & Hall's share for their use of it in the Edition.--Cf. Storey, p. 377, n. 4
