The blacklisting of Ray L. Fisher : typescript, 1981, August : the oldest (and perhaps noblest) Yankee of them all | WorldCat.org (original) (raw)

Summary:This paper takes a look at the circumstances, events, and power struggles taking place at the time that led to Fisher being put on baseball's ineligible list. August Herrmann, then owner of the Cincinnati Reds, and Fisher disagreed over salary amounts, and Fisher left the Reds to coach college baseball at the University of Michigan. Fisher was told he was put on the voluntarily retired list but when he asked to play again he found himself on the ineligible list most likely because he wanted to play for Branch Rickey who was at odds with Herrmann. All of this happened around the time of the Black Sox scandal and Kenesaw M. Landis being made commissioner. Fisher approached Landis but was denied a change in status. The author speculates that there were a number of factors working against Fisher at the time
