Papers, 1956-1981 (bulk 1967-1977) | WorldCat.org (original) (raw)

Summary:The collection contains papers of John W. Hakola, professor of history at the University of Maine at Orono from 1959 to 1981. The papers were gathered by Professor Hakola in his work in the History Department at the University of Maine. It also contains material reflecting his interest in the environment and natural resources of Maine. The collection opens with files from the History Department, 1956-1977. Included are minutes of meetings from departmental committees on which Hakola served, departmental memos, reports, correspondence, etc. Of particular interest are files from 1957 and 1958 when the department was establishing its Ph. D. program. The collection also contains photocopies of various scrapbooks of Percival P. Baxter, governor of Maine, 1921-1925, and donor of the land for Baxter State Park; these were presumably used by Hakola in his book about the park. The clippings also document Baxter's interest in waterpower. The collection ends with a group of newsletters from environmental, conservation and recreation organizations
