Summary:Account books, cashbooks, orderly books, and a journal primarily relating to Gates' career in the British and later American military (1750-1780). Military account books include cash received and paid out from Capt. Gates' company (1750-1753), cash accounts for purchase of stores for the army under command of General Monckton and rendered against the crown by Plumsted & Franks (1760-1761), and a warrant book/cash accounts (1780); also a household account book probably kept by Mrs. Gates while living in England (1768-1769). Orderly books include one kept at Oneida Station, New York (later Fort Stanwix) in 1758 and another kept on the march from Carlisle to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1759. Gates' journal dates from the expedition to Nova Scotia to build a fort at Chegnecto and expel the French and Indians (1750). The Articles of Convention relate to General Burgoyne's surrender to Gates Oct. 17, 1777 at Saratoga, N.Y
