Summary:Diaries, February 20, 1859 - July 17, 1859, kept while traveling in Europe with her family. The diaries cover time in Italy, Switzerland, Austria (including Prague and Teplitz), Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium. Trowbridge describes sightseeing and social life, with some comments on political events. The family visited the studios of American artists in Rome, including Harriet Hosmer, and were in Rome for Carnival; there is a good deal of material on Carnival merrymaking, pelting the Prince of Wales with confetti, etc. They were in Florence at Easter, and were still there at the outbreak of war, when they escaped to Switzerland, seeing extensive French troop movements as they crossed the Alps. Trowbridge describes the mood in Florence at this time, and mentions the exile of the Grand Duke of Tuscany, whom she describes seeing at the Cathedral only a few days earlier.
