Summary:ALS to the editor of the [New York?] Tribune on behalf of Mrs. Lizzie R. Smith, widow of Lieutenant Richard H. Smith, a member of the United States Army 3rd Artillery, who was lost at sea when the Steamer San Francisco sunk in the Atlantic during a hurricane while enroute to California on December 24, 1853. St. Aldegonde describes the efforts of Senator Lafayette S. Foster of Connecticut, and others in Congress to persuade Congress and members of the House and Senate Committees on Claims to reimburse Mrs. Smith for her husband's personal and household articles that were lost in the accident, and details the military service of many of Mrs. Smith's family members.
