Summary:Receipts, legal documents, bills of lading, certificates, promissory notes, payment summaries, checks, maps, charts and blueprints document railroad companies operating primarily in Mississippi and Louisiana between 1837 and 1913. While the bulk of the records relate to railroad transportation of people and goods, some identify freight steamboats and document the transfer of cotton and other goods to and from railroad depots. Most of the legal documents are proposed amendments to railroad company charters, although some deal with claims against individuals for delinquent payments to railroad companies. most railroad companies are represented by only a small number of documents in this collection
