Set 100 years in the future, Quantum Redshift lets players take to the track in a no-holds-barred combat pod racing tournament with the chance of reaching speeds up to 900 miles per hour. You can bet it'll be hard to see any stop signs going that fast.

"The Xbox needs a future-racing game!" someone at Microsoft declared one day, and so it was that Curly Monsters (the team which had previously created Infogrames' NGEN Racing for the PlayStation) was assigned to produce one. This is exactly the problem with Quantum Redshift: you can instantly tell that it was born out of corporate necessity, not creative passion. It's a game without a soul, thrown together to "fill a niche" and "target a demographic." (And, yes, I'm doing finger-quotes as I write that.) This certainly isn't the most blatant example of a game that was developed in a series of boardroom meetings -- hello, Ty the Tasmanian Tiger -- but it's one of the most depressing. Read More ยป

The game has more than 100 weapons effects, enabling characters to attack with everything from plasma bolts or tidal waves to nuclear weapons; Tracks: The game features 16 detail-laden tracks across eight locations throughout the world where gamers hurtle across rough terrain, through forests, across turbulent water and over massive jumps.; Characters: Players choose from 16 characters, including Tara Vivas, a former red-hot teen pop sensation; Prince Yuri Galitz, a wealthy Russian who claims to be the last of the Romanov line; and Kumiko Nikaido, the daughter of one of the greatest racers of all time. Each of the 16 drivers has his or her own unique ship, home circuit and weapons. Intense archrival storylines, developed throughout the game via cut scenes and animation, range from "political adversaries" to "estranged lovers."
