THE AMPHICTYONS HONOUR MENTOR OF NAUPAKTOS

The unusual phrase 'first tent' in this decree apparently means that Mentor could stay in the best tent site while attending meeting of the council; see M.Dillon, "Pilgrims and Pilgrimage in Ancient Greece", page 209 ( Google Books ).

In the year of Kallikles as archon at Delphi, at the autumn meeting of the council, with the following men acting as hieromnemon:

• Aetolians: Nikiadas, Lykeas, Mikkylos, Hybrillos, Leon, Krinolaos, Antileon, Damoxenos, Amynandros
• Delphians: Dexitheös, Herys
• Boeotians: Phainandros, Permon
• Phocians: Menexenos
• Lakedaimonians: Phabennos

The hieromnemones awarded to Mentor of Naupaktos [in Aetolia], the son of Damosthenes, for himself and his descendants, priority in receiving justice and security and inviolability and freedom from all taxes; and the first tent at the council meeting shall be available to him, since he has supervised and prepared the adornment of Athena Pronaia.
