THE AMPHICTYONS RECOGNISE TEOS AS INVIOLABLE

Greek text: FD_3.2.134.b
Date: 203/2 B.C.
Format: see key to translations

This decree of the Amphictyons must have followed fairly soon after the decision made at the spring assembly of the Aetolian League ( Syll_563 ). For the inviolability of the Dionysiac artists, which is mentioned at the end of the decree, see Syll_507.

Gods. [When Megartas was archon, at the spring assembly], and the hieromnemones were as follows:

Since Pythagoras son of Kleitos and Kleitos son of Kleitos have come as envoys from the people of Teos to the Aetolian league, and appearing before the hieromnemones they have recounted the privileges and honours [granted] by the Aetolians to [the people] of Teos; therefore it is resolved by the Amphictyons that the city and territory of Teos shall be sacred to Dionysos and inviolable from all aggression; and that the Amphictyons grant to the Teians and those who dwell in Teos all the same privileges and honours as have been granted by the Amphictyons to the Dionysiac artists.
