Campbell initially declined offers from to try out for the senior list, but after winning a premiership with Traralgon in <1987> he joined the Bulldogs, playing 30 games over five seasons. His most productive year was <1989>, playing 14 games and kicking 21 goals to lead his side. He played just eight games in his last three years, affected by a serious knee injury in a final. He missed all of <1991> and was cleared to the Demons at the end of <1992>.
Campbell didn't play until the last two games of <1993> season, kicking five goals in his only senior appearances. Remained on the list in <1994> but did not play seniors again, missing most of the year after a serious ankle injury, and was delisted at the end of the season. He was invited to pre-season at with a view to them selecting him in the pre-season draft but he wasn't picked.
Played for Leongatha in <2001> and was later an assistant coach at Wantirna. Coached Leongatha in <2010> and <2011>.
Campbell's daughter Campbell was Melbourne's first father/daughter pick before the 2022 AFLW summer season, debuting later that year.
