Debuted for North Melbourne in <1987> and played 61 games over nine seasons as a forward and midfielder. Unable to break into a star-studded midfield, Clarkson captained a premiership in <1995> before being traded to Melbourne. The Demons were looking for an experienced midfielder to boost their thin stocks, and got 41 games out of him over the next two years. He had been pursued by Melbourne three seasons earlier but opted to stay with the Roos.
Clarkson served as Melbourne's conditioning coach in <1998>, before taking over as senior coach at VFL side Werribee. He then joined St Kilda as a specialist coach, before leading Central Districts to an premiership. Spent two years as a midfield/forward coach with Port Adelaide before being appointed senior coach of Hawthorn in <2005>. He coached the Hawks until <2021>, winning four premierships. In <2023> he coached North Melbourne during the first half of the year before resigning.
