Nicknamed "Bull", Adams was a former West Australian state player, who debuted in senior football at 15-years-old. Adams crossed to Victoria in <1923> to join Fitzroy but was instead forced to go to Preston as captain-coach when he was unable to secure a clearance from South Fremantle.
Eventually winning his way to Fitzroy, Adams debuted in <1924> and played there until <1926> after which he accepted a role as Captain/Coach of Northcote in the . During his time at the club he played 51 games, captained the side and represented Victoria. After training with before the <1928> the two parties failed to come to terms and instead he returned to Preston as captain/coach, kicking 69 goals in <1929>.
In <1930> he captain/coached North Launceston in Tasmania then joined Prahran in the in <1931>. He captain/coached them for half a season before leaving to return to the VFL with Melbourne as a 30-year-old. Adams spent most of his time in defence but had occasional forays into the midfield. When he was in attack Adams, alongside his ex-Fitzroy teammates Arthur Dickens was one of the last few players in the league to regularly use the place kick.
After his retirement from senior football Adams became coach of the Seconds and while he was in charge between <1933> and <1944> the side won four premierships in succession and five in total under his leadership. He continued to play football into <1938>.
Adams became coach of South Melbourne in <1945> and led them to a Grand Final in his first season but resigned midway through the <1948> season. The next year he joined Ardmona as one of the few non-playing coaches in country football.
Ran for election to the Melbourne committee in <1966> but was unsuccessful.
