The rover didn't take up football until his family moved from Bacchus Marsh to Fairfield in the early 1920s, but when he did he quickly impressed Collingwood scouts and was invited to join the Pies in <1925>
After playing 15 games in his first season Libbis missed the Grand Final loss to Geelong. The next year he was first choice rover and played in the Grand Final loss to Melbourne.
From there he went on to win four straight flags from 1927-1930 and was best on ground in the <1929> triumph. Early in the <1933> season he had a dispute with Collingwood over match payments and was forced to leave for Melbourne.

After his time at Melbourne ended Libbis coached State Savings Bank in the amateurs in <1938>, then joined Northcote in the and played there through <1941>. He joined their committee in <1944>.
