Signed by Sydney from Riverina town Leeton in <1989>, Nettelbeck made his AFL debut in <1990>. He remained at the Swans until the end of <1994>, playing in three wooden spoons. He then moved to for their inaugural season but didn't play a game. During his time with the Dockers he had trouble with injuries, and when fit played with side East Perth.

Nettelbeck was handed a lifeline by Melbourne before the start of the <1996> season, but played in his fourth wooden spoon a year later. He missed almost half that season with shoulder and back injuries, undergoing surgery on the troublesome shoulder at the end of the year. He played 17 games in <1998> but couldn't break into a much improved side. He joined the Western Bulldogs in <1999> but a pre-season knee injury ended his career. Nettelbeck later became an accredited player agent.
