Cox played 16 games for Fitzroy between <1980> and <1983> before joining the Demons. The utility player had been set to join , but they didn't want to pay the Lions' asking price. He suffered a hamstring injury on his Melbourne debut, and the injury reoccurred as he returned through the . Cox didn't play seniors again until Round 20, was suspended for two games the next week after being reported three times. He nearly left the club in the <1985> pre-season when work commitments clashed with training, but remained and played eight games. He added two more games in <1986>, but a serious shoulder dislocation in an early <1986> game meant he didn't play seniors again after Round 2.

After 13 games in three seasons, Cox joined the new formed Brisbane Bears in <1987>. He was knocked out early in his only game for them, injured his ankle in a QAFL game, hurt his knee on return from that, and was dropped from Brisbane's list in the <1988> pre-season.
