After first appearing on the senior list in <1969>, the defender played eight games in <1970> before returning to Shepparton United in the Goulburn Valley League. He was named their captain/coach in <1973> aged 23. Melbourne was keen to keep Campbell but he preferred to remain in the country, only reluctantly travelling to the city to train and play.
Campbell returned to the Demons in <1975> and played three more seasons before retiring. In his last year Campbell was captain of the . He then captain/coached Tongala in <1978> and <1979> before rejoining Shepparton United again in <1980>, captain/coaching them through <1982>. He then returned to Tongala in <1983> through <1985> and in <1992> coached Kyabram, then the ACTFL's Tuggeranong in <1992>.
His son Brad played for Melbourne and another, Blake, played for Carlton.
