Debuting with the Reds in <1893>, Wardill remained with the club throughout its early VFL years but also filled in with his old side Alberton in <1895>. He missed the first five rounds of <1897> while playing Juniors with Caulfield, before returning to Melbourne.

He was one of the best afield in the shock 1900 Grand Final triumph.

Played for the VFL in a game against Ballarat in June 1900.

He retired after three games of <1901>, but returned the next season to play the first three games of the year again.

In <1924> he appeared in an 'old players' charity game aged 52. He died after jumping in front of a train in <1929>.
