Recommended to the Demons by Premier Henry Bolte, Wise had a horror debut when he ran into Carl Ditterich, and played just three games in his first season. After dropping out of the senior side, Melbourne intended to play him in the but the Ballarat League wouldn't provide an extension on his initial three match permits unless he was picked for the seniors and Wise had to return to Ballarat.

He returned in <1964>, and despite earning the wrath of Norm Smith for missing a practice game while fruit picking, Wise played most of the year as a much improved solo ruckman and retained his spot right through to the Grand Final.

After just two more seasons - including one match in <1966> - he retired and moved to Tasmania to play and coach. He had also been pursued by side Waverley and a number of country clubs. Wise played in a premiership with Launceston and later coached Golden Point.
