Recruited to Melbourne after 28 games for Port in <1919> and <1920>, Coy became his side's first choice full-back despite being undersized for the position. He represented Victoria twice, injuring his shoulder in a <1923> game and missing five weeks. Coy also played representative matches for the VFL against Bendigo in <1923> and Gippsland in <1927>.
A deceptively quick defender, Coy kept Gordon Coventry to two goals in the 1926 Grand Final victory.
He had a delayed start to <1928> due to knee trouble in the pre-season, and only played eight games in his final year.
Almost exclusively a defender, three of his four career goals came in a two week span of playing forward in Round 4 and Round 5, 1924.
