An Under 19s player who moved up to the in <1972>, McGuiness represented the VFL Seconds against New South Wales that year and was best afield in seven of his 10 games.
He made his senior debut the next year and remained on the list in <1974> wearing number 44 where he finished runner-up in the Best and Fairest but played no further senior games. Transferred to Fitzroy in <1975>, then joined side Prahran. Remained with the Two Blues through <1980>, a year he represented the league against South Australia, then took a job as captain/coach of Heyfield in <1981>, before joining Narre Hallem. Joined Mordialloc in <1984> after being transferred in his day job as a police officer.
Later played for Monbulk.
