Recruited after winning South Bendigo's best and fairest McLean spent his first three years at the Demons in and out of the senior side before establishing himself as a courageous winger with 20 games in <1954> including the losing Grand Final. That year he was selected for Victoria for the only time, playing two matches.
The next year he played in a premiership side and didn't play less than 14 games again until <1960> when he retired midway through that year to move into television commentary with Channel 7. Several weeks earlier he had flagged the possibility of retiring after achieving his life membership for 10 years service.
McLean died just five years later aged 35 after a short illness.
