Drafted as a wingman/forward with Melbourne's first selection in the 2020 Draft, Bowey was given a senior opportunity as a defender in late <2022> after impressing in the VFL, He came into the side just as they were heading towards a first minor premiership since <1964>.

In his third game, Bowey was nominated for the Rising Star award, and he held his spot through Melbourne's finals campaign, winning a premiership in his seventh game without playing in a loss. He was also in the side for the first 10 wins of the <2022> season, giving him the second best winning start to a career in VFL/AFL football. He fell out of favour late in the year, dropped after Round 17 and playing one more game as an injury replacement before missing finals. He returned as a regular in <2023>, missing just two games and was given a contract extension to the end of 2026 at the end of the year.

In the first game of <2024>, Bowey suffered a serious shoulder injury that kept him out of the side until Round 9.

Bowey's father Brett played 85 games for St Kilda between <1988> and <1994>, and his sister Hannah was on the North Melbourne AFLW list in the 2022 spring season.
