A Thirds and Seconds ruckman from <1949> onwards, Ferguson was promoted to the senior side in <1950>. He spent time on the fringe of the Demons side as a ruckman/defender, never playing more than six games in a season, before being cleared to South Melbourne in early <1955>.
Ferguson was more successful with South, playing 25 games in three seasons, also appearing for the Swans' summer basketball team. His father Jack had also played for South between <1926> and <1928>.
