Kerr originally wanted to play for Melbourne after playing for Melbourne Grammar under Demon director Eric Taylor, but was residentially tied to the Bulldogs who refused to let him go.

The rover spent six years at Footscray and was one of their best on ground in the 1954 Grand Final where he racked up 32 possessions. He played 81 games with the Bulldogs but left midway through <1958>.

He originally applied for a clearance to side Yarraville but was cleared to Melbourne shortly after. He made his debut in the Seconds in Round 8, but didn't make his senior debut for another seven weeks.

Replacing Frank Adams, out with a pulled thigh muscle, Kerr kicked two goals but was dropped and never played for the Demons again.

In <1959> he joined side Mordialloc, where he won a Best and Fairest, and later played for Springvale.
