After first training with the club in the <1946> pre-season, Carlon made his senior debut three years later. He played 30 games over two seasons, but was 19th man 11 times in <1950>. Carlon captained the in <1951> and <1952> without playing another senior game. During <1951> several clubs sought he signature but he stayed at Melbourne.

In <1953> he coached Rennie in the NSW Coreena League and in <1954> was in charge of Cornwall in Tasmania.

Carlon later returned to the club as a recruiting officer. He was appointed to the committee in November <1970> to replace Brian Dixon, who was leaving to coach North Melbourne and remained on the committee until resigning in <1979>.
