A talented rover who followed his father Richie to the club and worked his way through the Under 19s. Emselle was on the bench in Melbourne's 1964 premiership side and a regular for the next three seasons before injuring his knee and missing all of <1968> before returning for two games in <1969>.
Emselle only played two senior matches in his last year, but was a regular for the , winning the Gardiner Medal for the best player in the competition and captaining Melbourne to a premiership. That year he captained the VFL Reserves in a match against New South Wales.
He joined club Prahran in <1970> where he was a two time Best and Fairest and a premiership captain in <1973>. Played there through <1975>.
