Invited to train with Melbourne Bamblett initially resisted until a chance meeting with Ron Barassi in the streets of Shepparton convinced him to travel to Melbourne early in <1982>. Despite missing the first month and a half of the season, and playing several games in the reserves, he won the Morrish Medal for the best player in the Under 19s competition.

Debuting in the first round of <1983> Bamblett kicked two goals in his first game, despite being cleaned up by David Cloke, but despite showing flashes of brilliance and tremendous speed, was erratic and largely ineffectual in his one year with the Demons.

Unhappy with life at Melbourne and desperate to play at alongside Maurice Rioli and Phil Egan, Bamblett crossed to the Tigers in the <1984> pre-season but, the two clubs couldn't agree on a transfer fee so he returned to Lemnos. Shortly after he moved to Perth and signed with Claremont but was unable to play for them due to clearance issues. He eventually signed with just before the <1984> transfer deadline, in an exchange for Steve O'Dwyer, who was zoned to the Bulldogs.

Bamblett's first season at the Western Oval was a disappointment with just four games, but he burst onto the scene in <1985> with 51 goals. From there on he was plagued with injuries including a snapped achilles and a total knee reconstruction and played just nine more games over the next three years for four goals.

His nephews Andrew Lovett (Essendon) and Chris Egan (Collingwood) both played senior football.
