Best on ground in the <1975> Under 19s Grand Final, Hamilton was a fringe player who spent eight years on the senior list but never managed more than 13 games in a year. His brother John had already been at the Demons a decade earlier for two games.

Hamilton started as a back-pocket/ruckman, and was named as full-back in the first round of <1978> but failed to make the position his own and after playing a career high 13 games in <1979> managed just 15 combined over the next four seasons. In <1980> he played for a Rest of Australia team in an exhibition game against Victoria, and represented Tasmania the next year.

After his VFL career finished he played with North Bendigo for two years, before joining Prahran in <1986>. Hamilton played in their Second Division premiership in <1987> and remained at the club until the end of <1989> before retiring.
