First tried with the senior side in a 1963 mid-season exhibition match, McLean had to wait until Round 8 before making his league debut. A reserve in the 1964 Grand Final, half-back flanker McLean didn't get a run and after appearing in every game of <1965> either on-field or as a reserve was made captain of the reserves for <1966> and told he would not be considered for senior selection.
He had wanted to play as a ruck rover but never got the chance under Norm Smith, so took the opportunity to reunite with Ron Barassi at Carlton where he won another premiership in <1968> before ending his career. After his retirement at 27 years old he served on the Carlton committee and as chairman of selectors.
He later returned to Old Melburnians as coach, taking them to a B Section premiership in <1978>.
