Originally home to , and also had stints at the ground. In the 1990s and early 2000s it was used for low-drawing games involving other Victorian teams.

During the early 1900s the ground was known as Princes Oval.

In <2004> chairman Paul Gardner suggested that the ground may become the permanent training base for the club, but nothing came of the plan.

Melbourne was the last club to win a premiership match at the venue, in Round 9, 2005.

The AFLW competition used the ground as its premium Victorian venue from 2017.
