After starting his career with the Under 19s in <1957>, Nilsson's progress was slowed by breaking the same shoulder twice between the end of that season and <1958>.

Once he reached the seniors in <1960>, Nilsson impressed as a rover and forward pocket, retaining his place in the side right through to the Grand Final.

After recovering from a broken wrist in a practice match he was a regular again in <1961>, but found opportunities limited in his last two years at the club when he played more as a wingman. Dropped from the list in the <1964> pre-season, he moved to South Melbourne in <1964> where he spent two seasons.

In <1966> Nilsson became captain/coach of South Warrnambool.
