The defending premiers travelled to Geelong for their first engagement in the defence of the flag, and after starting the game with the breeze in their favour they led until the last five minutes of a scoreless final term when Geelong pipped them on the post.
In the absence of Richard Wardill the side was captained by Fred McGinis, and he was one of the best alongside Langley and Purse.
