With the Victorian state side playing in the same week the Demons were missing Frank Roberts and Norm Smith. Richmond lost Jack Dyer and Dick Harris. It didn't hurt Melbourne as they easily beat their second straight top four contender, this time beating the top of the table Tigers with ease as they had against Essendon a week earlier.

Richmond had won six in a row, but they had no answers for the brilliant Demons who stamped themselves as serious premiership contender. Had they kicked for goal better the margin would have been even more extreme, but their dominance around the ground meant that the forwards couldn't fail to get it right eventually with all the chances coming their way.

In the first quarter Melbourne's quick play-on tactics troubled Richmond, but the margin was only eight points. In the second term mistakes punctuated the play, but despite dominance in the ruck Melbourne couldn't take advantage on the scoreboard. The margin was cut to less than a goal before the Demons kicked away to a 15 point lead at half time.

From a high of 23 points, Richmond got the margin back to 11 before another end of the quarter opened a five goal gap. Lock kicked the first goal of the last quarter and Melbourne was home

Best were La Fontaine, Daly and Anderson. Daly came in as a late replacement when Heal was unable to obtain leave from the Navy to play. Wilson was the 19th man in the selected side.

The victory lifted the Demons to third, level with Essendon and just one win behind the Tigers.
