The home side got off to a quick start, but their inaccuracy cost them dearly as Melbourne made better of their chances to put themselves in a winning position in the last quarter. Ironically just when the Redlegs started kicking inaccurately it helped them to victory as Geelong could only add a point in the final term.
Melbourne's win was made even more special by the fact that they were missing Chadwick, Dunbar, Thomas and Streeter from their team.
Barnes, Ogden and Latham were best.
