Melbourne's season was already over, a promising burst in the middle of the year having come to nothing, but despite a poor run over the previous month North were still playing for a spot in the four and in front of a traditionally poor Arden Street crowd they came out on top in a thriller.

It hadn't been easy for the Roos all day. The Demons led comfortably at quarter time, and it took until the last change for North to be only two points behind. Still, Melbourne ran away in the first half of the last quarter. With eight minutes left they were 25 points in front and North, who had lost a game after the siren against South Melbourne the week before, looked like they were going down to another loss. The margin could have been even more extreme had Melbourne taken their chance with the wind in the third quarter like they did in the first.

Three goals to North, the last two both to Sam Kekovich, cut the margin to a goal with three minutes left. The margin was cut by three straight behinds to the Roos before Ray Taylor marked at centre-half forward and kicked truly with the aid of a strong breeze to put the Roos in front and win.

Best were Bourke, Dillon and Campbell. Kelvin Clarke and Ray Biffin were unused reserves.
