Melbourne's mid-season slump extended to four games in a match that was overshadowed by the media frenzy surrounding Gary Ablett's return from retirement. He only kicked two goals for the day, but was part of a side that slammed home eight goals to three in the third quarter to register a victory.

The Cats held most of the Melbourne forwards comfortably. While Bill Brownless was busy booting seven at one end Darren Bennett was being beaten comfortably at the other and got two of his goals in the dying minutes when the game was already over.

Geelong dominated the midfield and without Garry Lyon, Rod Owen or Simon Eishold available through injury John Northey was disappointed with his big men. Earl Spalding came in for criticism for a failed attempt at a one handed pick up when allowed Garry Hocking a free goal.

After going into the last quarter 42 points behind Melbourne kicked three quick goals to cut the margin to 24, but Geelong soon steadied to hold on and win comfortably.

Best were T. Viney, J. Viney and J. Stynes
